About Us

We are a privately owned family hotel - and it shows.

The London Elizabeth was originally built in 1850 as three private houses in a new terrace of elegant family homes on Lancaster Gate Terrace, as it was then known, in the area of Bayswater, London.

The area had already become extremely fashionable through its proximity to the Court of St James, the seat of Government at Westminster, the wide array of city centre artisans and traders and its most pleasing aspect over Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park.

Amongst its early resident dignitaries is believed to be at number three, the family of Lord Butler, who used the house as a town residence. Their wine cellars, with original bin numbers clearly marked, were to remain in use for over one hundred and thirty years. Some ten years after taking up residence the family added the feature of a cast iron and leaded glass semicircular domed conservatory at the back of the house, overlooking the stable and gardens.

The houses continued in use as the London residences at that time was the family of the young boy later to become the Right Honourable Greville Janner Q.C., one of the longest serving and most highly respected Members of Parliament. In 1997 he was elevated to the House of Lords as the Lord Janner of Braunstone Q.C.

During the Second World War the houses were used as billeting for the Polish Air Force in furnished rooms. The two houses were later linked to the only other remaining original Victorian private house in Lancaster Terrace to form the present London Elizabeth Hotel.

Today, we hope that you will savour the charm, character and atmosphere of a bygone age whilst still enjoying the modern facilities and high levels of service for which we are known. We look forward to welcoming you to the London Elizabeth Hotel and hope your stay with us is a pleasurable one.
